Thanks for coming by for another of our monthly updates from the Wiki team. As the site is growing and maturing, we're working out how to handle these update posts going forward - once a month is great for a big showcase of what we've achieved last month, but it isn't best for most social media platforms. We may try to post smaller updates more frequently across our socials (see below) and leave the big update posts for the site front page.

With that said, here's what the community has spent the last month doing:

Slower growth on equipment pages in July, in large part due to the fact that the devices we're adding now have very little information easily found online. Some of our recent additions have little or no information available on search engines so as always, we ask for your contributions and assistance in adding as much data as possible for the whole community to benefit from. Considering this, we're very proud of our 60 additions (12% increase) and will hit 600 very soon.

More equipment sorting

Each Equipment manufacturer page now has links to each class of device. The detailed listings now include the picture of each device. Let us know if this is causing slowdowns for you.

We've commissioned several designers to work with us on creating a logo for a cohesive branding across our social media accounts (and later, merch.) These are still WiP so we can't show them yet, but it's very exciting and we can't wait to share!

Our community members have added several new guides this month, and updated others.

Modern battery guide

jtd121 has added a very useful Modern battery guide in our Accessories section for helping you find new batteries to replace the original ones that have since failed.

Model naming conventions

jtd121 has also added a guide to help decipher model names for Sony equipment - very useful when browsing auction listings or ads.

Buying from Japan guide

Gerg has started a guide to buying equipment from Japan, including terms to look out for, fees, and “gotchas”

ToC cloning

kvf3 recently added a very helpful guide on ToC cloning, especially with the MZ-N710. It features high-res macro shots of what to modify and detailed instructions.

Getting started guide

The Getting started guide we added in the last update has been expanded with a list of recommended first-time devices and ones to avoid.

And there's a tl;dr version for someone who may be curious about the format but doesn't want to read the whole guide.

We've seen a few people spell MiniDisc with a K instead of a C, so we registered the minidisk.wiki domain and have it redirect to the correct spelling. We may not keep it forever, so try to remember that (magneto-)optical discs are spelt with a C! K is for magnetic disks such as hard drives and floppies.

We're still trying really hard to get more contributions from the community. We know that there are thousands of us in the MiniDisc scene online sharing photos and experiences, and we want to see that translate into wiki contributions. Our admins and wiki champions can't be adding everything!

To reduce the barriers to contributing photos, we've added a Photo submission page with no registration required - just pick the photo(s), add a title, and submit. We'll be notified and can move the photo if we decide to add it to a page or guide.

Our group on Discord are currently cleaning up a lot of pages and adding new guides. We're also starting new equipment pages as we approach 600. We estimate around 800-900 total MD devices, so we're doing very well!

We would again like to ask that you consider our Patreon to help with hosting and administrative costs. To avoid ever running ads on the wiki, we're looking into Amazon and eBay affiliate links as well.

The biggest way to help our cause is to add or correct pages and share the wiki with those you think would benefit from it. Thanks for your time and support!
