Portable player. Has a “new smart slot” type loader. You just slide the disc in, it opens automatically. When the open switch is depressed, the top of the device pops up and the disc slides out. The open switch is also part of the battery slot (care must be taken so that it all lines up when closing the battery bay).

The rubber on the sides of my device got sticky/tacky, but a wipe with an alcohol towel cleaned it up nicely.

The player did not have any direct way of charging its battery, but you could connect it to an AC adapter using an aftermarket sidecar.

The bundled remote is very nice. The viewing angles on mine are rather poor, but that may be due to age.

Note (added 7 Dec 2023): While released in late-2000, this device is not MDLP compatible. The “MDLP” part noted under the お知らせ section on page 4 of the manual essentially states the following: This unit cannot play discs recorded in LP2 or LP4 – no sound will be produced ※ MDLP is a new format
