It's nearly the end of another year in the MD fandom and things are pretty quiet, but here's our brief check-in. We have updates on MiniDisc Day 2023 (31st birthday), our numbers, server updates, and site backups.

MD31 on November 1st 2023 was a fantastic time and we're so thankful for everyone who took part. We had a number of new album releases and giveaways to mark MiniDisc's 31st birthday and remind the world that we're still here, enjoying physical media in its best form! We hope to build on the momentum of the last two years to have a great celebration of MD every year at the start of November. Please contact us if you want to take part and let us promote your projects or releases!

So, where is the wiki and the community?

We have 2149 equipment pages, so many more than I even knew existed. It was an achievement to match the 868 minidisc.org has, and then 1000, but this is something else! There are still some devices on our Missing Pages list so a total of 2200 is definitely in sight. Wiki champion Jdub will probably yell at me for making a prediction he'll likely break before we know it. Please help add pages if you come across anything on an auction site or on the web that we don't have listed.

On social media, all of Discord, Instagram and Twitter have over 1000 followers, each with their own culture and passion for the format and hobby. If you're not already a member, please join on whichever services you enjoy. On Reddit, /r/MiniDisc is almost at 10,000 members! The forum we set up several months ago hasn't caught traction, so we may shut it down some time unless something changes to better allocate the donations from our generous friends via Patreon and Ko-Fi.

We moved to a new server! Immediately after updating the subreddit, begging newcomers to please check the resources we've made available to answer their common questions, the site went down and I decided to move our new server into action immediately. This server is better-specced, uses better performing software, and the improvement is noticeable. Please let us know if you encounter any issues.

Server backups

Every month I try to make a full backup of the site's content (minus users and configuration) available on our Resources storage. With this and your own Dokuwiki installation (or tools to parse the pages and databases) you can completely recreate the site, which is a public resource for the good of anyone who would benefit from it. The backups haven't been updated since we moved to the new server, but I'm confident another one will be available soon and that what we've published preserves so much of the hard work we have done together as a community.

And that's all we've got for now! There are still many things in the pipeline, like an updated Web MiniDisc guide to make it easier to browse and include the new Hi-MD modes; linkable battery pages in the equipment infoboxes; and maybe even translations once Dokuwiki supports it.

Thanks so much for being along for the journey, your contributions, and everything that comes next. Until then, take care!
